Principles of Flight Class

The Principles of Flight class has had an activity for a number of years (28 or so) in which powered flight has been taught through pop bottle rocketry. After the students have perfected their rocket to go as high and straight as possible, they are then given the problem to solve by creating a nose cone that will take a raw egg into space and safely return it to earth unbroken. If the student is successful in their attempt and the egg is unbroken they are then given the opportunity to throw the egg through a chain link fence. If the egg emerges on the other side unbroken again, they win a $20.00 prize. For almost 30 years an egg has not come through this procedure unbroken and my $20.00 has been safe until Rylee Rexine shot a rocket off which reached a height 367 feet, came down and buried the nose cone about 6 inches into the ground and still protected the egg. She then took out the egg, went to the fence and from 10 feet away threw it at the fence AND MADE IT THROUGH! The legacy was broken, a champion was crowned, $20.00 was given. Congratulations Rylee Rexine!
